As a past graduate of USQ and a BBRD student, I could not say enough wonderful things about this club. I started as a complete beginner and now have had the opportunity to compete at the Australian University Games in both Kendo and Judo. Making friends and learning new skills along the way.

The BBRD provides classes for university students and non-students of all different experience levels and training goals. All the disciplines promote the importance of finding a good balance between university studies, family, work, free time and club training.

During my time abroad I trained with these people in Aikido and Jujutsu and felt very safe and supported here - plus it was always great fun. The training is based on profound background knowledge and is made to provide a balance between the group members needs and possibilities and challenging them. When I get back to Australia I'll be most looking forward to train with these great people again :-)

Just go and try it, too!

Great place to learn

I have been training in several disciplines (Kendo, JuJutsu, IaiJutsu, Punchfit) through the USQ Martial Arts Club for several years now.

When I started, I had absolutely no prior experience of any martial arts and quite a poor fitness level. However the Kendo and Jujutsu instructor (particularly mentioned due to the earliest review here) has regularly demonstrated great skill in tailoring classes for participants of varied fitness and knowledge levels. This is one of the reasons I have continued to be able to train and improve!

The skill of the Club instructors means that all levels, from the complete beginner through to the experienced practitioner, can train and learn together in the same class and derive the satisfaction of having a good night's training in a safe environment.

I have been extremely impressed by the standard of all the Club's instructors overall plus the general attitude and camaraderie of the Club instructors and members.

The Club facilities have been steadily improving over the years as the disciplines and membership have expanded. We now train on great mats in a near-new, well-appointed Hall/dojo (Mort Estate Activity Centre) at a reasonable cost!

Outside of regular training times, there are other activities too - eg social functions (eg commencement dinners, awards nights), additional training opportunities with other dojos and guest instructors, public demonstrations (multi/cultural festivals, USQ events), University Games participation, the list goes on...

Some of the people I train with in the Club have become my dearest and most valued friends, and embody the Club values of perseverance, integrity and compassion. It is a personal delight to be an active member of this Club.

It's a great place to learn, train as hard as you can and also have fun, in true Budo spirit. Definitely worth checking out for yourself!

A Martial Arts Club for Everyone

The club is a place of support and great people. After a stressful day of uni assignments and paying my bills this is where I go to let it all go and mind my peace of mind.

Within the club I cross train in Jujutsu, Systema and Punch-fit. Many of the people in the club cross train in different disciplines to suit their interests. The instructor for Jujutsu has a great knowledge base and is supportive and patient with each of his students.

Systema is run like a student study group with each person bring something to the table and it is a great place for learning. While training hard there is never a night where I don't laugh at least once with the friends that I have made in the club.

Throughout the year there are many events in Toowoomba like the multicultural festival in Queens Park and at the University for the club to come together and show people what we do.

There are very caring people within the club both instructors/students and I am very happy to be part of this club.

The literary and martial arts together

First and foremost the spirit of the Bun Bu Ryu Do hall is truly one of compassion, gratitude and perserverance.

I am a student of two disciplines within the club and have found my time spent training not wasted, indeed I view the club as embodying true martial spirit.

The Jujitsu curriculum is transferred from an effective syllabus that results in a complete system of street-wise self-defense suitable for anyone to engage in. All of this due to the experience and knowledge of the Jujitsu instructor.

The Shinto Muso Ryu has absorbed myself and my daughter, their seems to be no going back. Taught by an instructor, par excellence.

Come along and make up your own mind ...

The poor review here is almost certainly written by a former member who was excluded from the Club at the beginning of 2012 for conduct unbecoming. It certainly contains the considerable inaccuracies and misrepresentations that came to be expected from this particular person.

Contrary to the statement in that review, all instructors have relevant coaching qualifications, current first aid certification and "Blue Cards", and years of experience in the arts they teach.

The Club is directly supported by Aikikai Australia, the Queensland Kendo Renmei (and indeed the "local kendo renmei"), Systema Australia, the Queensland based Menkyo Kaiden licensed instructor of Shinto Muso Ryo Jodo, Komei Kyuku iaijutsu and the Australian Jujitsu Federation. It also regularly hosts seminars delivered by high ranking practitioners of those arts.

The facilities are excellent. Grappling arts train on 100 square meters of Olympic standard judo mats (which are maintained in a clean and hygienic state). The atmosphere is friendly and cooperative.

But don't take this review's word for it. Come along to one of the training sessions in an art you are interested in. Have a chat to the instructor that night. Even observe or participate.

We just ask that you come and make up your own mind.

No!

The jujitsu instructor is not qualified, not competant, the kendo renmei in town has distanced themselves and the kodokan judo organisation has banned the president and the usq club from not only affiliating but participating.
