Aikido is a balancing force within my life and not just another martial art. Harmonising with an attacking force and redirecting it peacefully to a safe place for myself and the attacker is an interesting concept. Violence does not have to be met with violence or submission and Aikido teaches me another way. It is also fun, challenging and an interesting way to meditate.
There are dedicated meditation sessions on saturday mornings however I find that I always feel like I've been meditating after every session. By focusing on my internal energy or Ki first and then adapting to and moving with my attackers energy it becomes a form of moving meditation.
By practicing this way injuries are very rare. I have done a number of other martial arts and have stayed with this one for many years because of this. I am also a shift worker in a busy hospital and find that the lessons taught in the dojo transcend to my working and interpersonal life providing me a calm confidence in a stressful environment.
Sensei Hurley is an excellent teacher and all instructors are MAIA (Martial Arts Industry Association) certified with current blue cards.
