At Sendai Karate Club, we believe Karate is about far more than learning how to punch, kick or earn a black belt. It is about building confidence, discipline, resilience, respect and strength of character — qualities that extend beyond the dojo and into everyday life.
Founded in 1978 by Tasshi Kurt Klimkait, Sendai Karate has been teaching martial arts to Victorian families for nearly five decades. Today, with dojos in Carrum Downs and Ashwood, we continue that tradition through high-quality Shitō-Ryū Shūkōkai Karate-Dō instruction in a welcoming, family-focused environment.
Our training combines traditional Karate with modern teaching methods. Students develop strong foundations through kihon, kata, kumite, practical self-defence and dojo etiquette, while improving fitness, coordination and their understanding of Karate’s practical applications.
We welcome children, teenagers and adults of all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners through to experienced martial artists. Every student is encouraged to progress at their own pace, set meaningful goals and continually improve.
For children, Karate can help develop focus, confidence, coordination, discipline and resilience while providing positive role models and a sense of belonging. Teenagers and adults can improve fitness, learn practical self-defence, relieve stress and develop new skills within a supportive community.
Sendai Karate Club is led by Head Instructor Sensei Jean Vega, together with Founder Tasshi Kurt Klimkait and our experienced team. We are committed to preserving the traditions and values of Karate while continuing to learn, evolve and provide high-quality instruction.
Most importantly, Sendai is a community. Whether you are looking for an activity for your child, starting your own martial arts journey, returning after many years, or wanting to train as a family, you will always be welcome.
Come and experience Sendai Karate for yourself. Your first class is free, and no previous experience is needed.
