I started coming to the Ultimate Martial Arts Academy in Hallam after putting on a tremendous amount of weight (36kg) after having my 2nd Child. I was heavily overrweight (got to a shocking 90kg) was seriously unfit, unhealthy and more importantly too unmotivated to make a change? Within the first month i lost 7kg and then continued to have amazing results every month that followed. I am now 57kg and well towards achieving my pre-baby weight in just 5 months. Its been an incredible journey, and one that i could never have done without the support and encouragement of SiFu Henry. If you need to loose weight, increase your fitness, strength and flexibility whilst also learning a unique and scientific martial art that will teach you self-defence, discipline, dexterity, and assist you in achieving your goals personally, mentally and physically then you are definately in the right place. Why pay for a gym membership that youll barely ever use? Why run on a treadmill when you can learn a life long skill and art? Wing Chun's specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defence, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance. The effectiveness of this fighting style is achieved by well coordinated attacks with simultaneous defence and vise versa.
Due to its effectiveness this martial art makes for an effective form of self defence. Its excellent for women and men of all ages. There are elderly ladies and gents still practicing this art for mental acumen and physical strength. If you ever thought martial arts was primarily for the young and its far too late for you to start now- then think again, because its never too late to start! We are fortunate enough to have THE Best Wing Chung Academy and World Renowned SiFu Henry Araneda, incredibly close to us here in South East Melbourne ( Hallam ) so why not come by and give it a shot. It just may be the best thing you ever did!

I believe in Reviews! I believe that if someone bothers enough to take the time out of their busy schedules to express their experiences and opinions either positively or negatively that they should count for something since really at the end of the day, they gain nothing from sharing their experiences except the knowing that they may just assist someone in making the right decision at some point in the future. Hope this helps you in making the right decision about your martial arts training and find it somewhat useful.
So how did I choose Wing Chun out of the many styles and variations of martial arts? Well I never actually saw Wing Chun in action until I saw the incredible Donnie Yen in IP Man. After that, Wing Chun was it! After months of research into Wing Chun the different styles and variations and the best academy’s in Melbourne, I was shocked to find the greatest SiFu in Applied Wing Chung, (SiFu Henry Araneda) who was taught by Applied Wing Chun founder SiFu Duncan Leung who was a world renowned in-house disciple of Yip Man himself. And his martial arts academy was 10 min away from my house- It was fate! I had done my research and due diligence and was prepared to travel anywhere in Melbourne for his instruction, and he was here in hallam! what were the odds of that? If your lucky enough to be in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, you wouldn't be going anywhere else! If you live a bit further out...you have to make the decision if you want to learn from the best, so you can be the best, or save that 30 min in travel time and learn from some local substandard instructor? Its kinda a no brainer, everyone wants to learn from the best!
The amazing thing about SiFu Henry’s tutelage is that he is able to decipher how everyone learns and retains information which ensures that every student is retaining all that they learn in class and thus always advancing in their training. SiFu Henry becomes personally invested in the goals of every student and takes it upon himself to push you, encourage you, motivate you and help you achieve your goals.
Any martial art style is beneficial for children to take up, but Wing Chun Kung Fu is uniquely advantageous because its generally always older and bigger kids who bully, threaten and cause harm. Because Wing Chun is not based on size or strength smaller kids are able to overcome bigger kids more successfully learning this style of Martial Arts opposed to other styles. It is the only martial art style that was originally created by a woman for that exact purpose, for the smaller and weaker person to easily overcome the stronger and bigger opponent using science, leverage, speed and efficiency. Really its all about economy of motion, doing the most that you can with as little effort as possible. Its all about physics and body mechanics, and thats what makes it so efficient.
Nowadays with bullying on the rise I wanted to ensure that my kid not only knew how to defend themselves against physical attacks, but also had the confidence to stand up for themselves against mental and emotional bullying, taunting etc. It really does instill in them a sense of security that they can take care of themselves no matter what situation they may find themselves in, and that assurance for me as a parent is priceless!
Here are some things my kids have learnt from going to this school. These arent just benefits, they are life lessons that they will carry through to adulthood. I couldn't be happier with this academy and the instructor is brilliant!
Develop hand / eye Co-ordination
Increased Focus, Concentration and Mental Clarity
Increased Speed of thought
Increased Speed of hand and foot
Increased Fitness, strength and agility
Release built up energy or frustration
Developed their ability to work with others in a group environment/
overcome shyness
Made lots of friends
Built self- confidence, self-reliance, and reassurance that they knew how to handle themselves if they were ever attacked etc.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and hope you find the right school for your family. Its not an easy decision with so many schools out there offering kids martial arts classes so all the best and Good Luck!
